The Ordinary or Not so Ordinary? Serum Foundation and Full Coverage Foundation First Impressions and Comparison Review

June 29, 2017

The Ordinary Foundation Review

I couldn't be stopped.  Everything happened so quickly.  One minute I was watching a Wayne Goss youtube video on The Ordinary's foundations and the next my credit card was in my hand making an online order for both foundations.  Luckily I had no problem getting my hands on the products before the hype got to all the available quantities!

But first, in case you didn't already hear of The Ordinary (who, what?!)  Well...they are creating affordable skincare and makeup without sacrificing quality and effective ingredients.  These may compare to those high-end luxury skincare products that we all have laying around still half full.  Oh yea, these Colours are oil-free and cruelty-free!  You can check out their products at The Ordinary

Are these foundations (colours) ordinary or not so ordinary?!

Let's get on with the first impression review.

Serum Foundation
Cost-US $6.70 for 1 fl oz
Packaging- frosted plastic bottle with pump
Shade range- 21 shades to choose from and broken down further by undertone
Finish- semi-matte finish with full coverage and lightweight feel.
Fragrance- none
Texture/Consistency- runny and thin, lightweight

Coverage Foundation
Cost- US $6.90 for 1 fl oz
Packaging-frosted plastic bottle with pump
Shade range- 21 shades to choose from and broken down further by undertone
Finish- semi-matte finish lightweight feel but offers full coverage
Fragrance- none
Texture/Consistency- thin but not as runny as serum, lightweight

I purchased 2 shades of the serum foundation (1.0N and 1.1N) and only 1 shade of the full coverage (1.1N) because I wasn't too sure how light they would really be and figured I could use the lighter one as a mixer for either foundation.  I am typically the lightest or 2nd lightest foundation shades and I go for a neutral undertone.  Below are swatches on my pale skin.

*No Makeup

Ahh the dreaded no makeup photo.  You can see that I have lots of freckles (thanks Mom I still love you), dark circles (thanks kids I still love you too) and a couple of pimples (thanks face product but you are going back to store).  Anyway, let's see how the foundations apply.

*After application

I applied both foundations with different, but similar, dense foundation brushes.   For the purpose of comparing the two foundations,  I applied the serum foundation to the left side of my face and the coverage foundation to the right side of my face.  I did not use any primer.  I applied two layers of the serum foundation in order to get the coverage that the coverage foundation had.   They are very easy to blend and I found them to be buildable.  I would suggest you apply in stippling motions after blending to remove any brush strokes.

Can you tell the difference?  They are VERY similar.  I found the serum side to be slightly more natural.  It would be perfect if your skin is clear without much to cover up.  I do like that I can still see freckles peeking through.  Both felt extremely lightweight.  I waited for them set but I ended up using setting powder.

Let's see how they hold up throughout the day...

Both sides acted almost identically.  If the labels weren't on the bottle I probably wouldn't have noticed any major differences.  I found that after 2 and 4 hours of wear there wasn't much of a difference.  At the 6 hour mark I noticed I was becoming a bit shiny in my T-zone.  That's normal for my combination skin.  It did however transfer and began to come off my chin.  At the end of the day, I found that it was starting to settle in my fine lines and look a bit cakey on my chin and around my mouth and nose area.

It's a great drugstore priced foundation that I will continue using in my rotation. Next time, I will use a primer and setting spray to see if that helps with longevity.
Pros
Price- excellent!  cheaper than some of these drugstore foundations out there.  I won't feel bad if I don't use this up either.
Ease of application
buildable to medium
Natural coverage
generous shade range
good for sensitive skin

Cons
minor differences between the two formulas-no need for both
transfers
not full coverage
short wear time
begins to settle into fine lines
begins to look cakey the longer its on
might be on waitlist/backorder due to the overwhelming hype.

Were you able to get a hold of these?  If so, let me know how they worked for you in the comments below.
